David Cole, An Original Freestyle Pioneer

David Cole
We just got a call to do a tribute show for David Cole. Sometimes they mention David Cole to me and I have a Kool Aid smile. Sometimes they mention David Cole to me and I feel like someone punched the wind out of me. David was a very special person he touched people with his songs and made so many happy. I’m so honored to be a part of the “Legend of David Cole”.

But most people don’t know David personally, I did. He was such a caring person his mom family and friends meant everything to him. He took care of so many people, I wish he would have taken better care of himself. He helped to realize so many of my dreams. I miss my mentor, friend, producer and the best smothered pork chop maker in the world. The confidence you instilled in me has made me a strong sister and I’ll never forget that. Sometimes when I perform a David Cole song like “Because of You” I remember being in the studio and singing and David stopping the music and saying O.K. for real not for Fake I would look at him and be like “OH WORD” it’s like that…but I would get on the ball and rock those vocals. I remember when we recorded “My Heart Skips A Beat” it was a challenge.

I told David I had never felt that way I had never had a crush. He said Lucky You pretend lol so I did. When I met Latif I finally had that feeling that all consuming can’t eat can’t sleep butterflies in my tummy can’t live without you feeling. Now I rock that song on stage. I use to love going to the club Better Days to hear David play that was in the very beginning he use to bring his keyboard and play over the records those mixes were classics. The vibe was awesome in there it was kinda like The Garage back in the day. One of the last things David and I did together was record a song called “I Miss You” it’s a song about losing someone to death, he passed away soon after. I performed that song at the very first tribute to him. Unfortunately I no longer have a copy of it. I wish I did.

  1. Ah yes, David Cole. I used to love listening to C+C Music Factory. Thats when I originally discovered David Cole. I loved his music productions with partner in music Robert C. But I never knew of his history until the Remix album came out. Thats when I was like damnnnn, they produced all these people?? Yes, he truly is one of the originals. “Because of You” got over-played when I had the 12″ single when I was younger. I collected all the 12″ singles from the Cover Girls. But yeah, David is missed, but his music will live on forever. God Bless him.

    Much Love

  2. i remember loving c+c music factory. probably because i wanted to be zelma davis and date robert clivilles, but that’s besides the point. i loved their fusion of all hip-hop, pop and dance. i can still here “givin’ to you” and “ooh baby” in my ear. i loved them so much that i fell out of my chair in early 1990 when i heard they were working with mariah (who i loved and continue to do so). david’s absence is felt in the world of dance music. your written testimony is touching and only makes wish even harder that i too had the chance to know david.
